When to Go Birding in Colombia: Month-by-Month Guide

Complete month-by-month guide to birding seasons in Colombia. Peak months, regional variation, and why December through March is the classic choice.

By João Santos · 2026-04-19

Quick facts

  • Peak season: December-March (dry across most regions)
  • Best single month for endemics: February
  • Wettest months in the Andes: April-May, October-November
  • Amazon and Chocó: productive year-round
  • Llanos peak: December-March (accessible savannas) and July-August (wetland concentrations)

By region

Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

Best December through March. January and February are classic. The Caribbean coast receives very little rain in this window and trails at El Dorado Reserve are reliably passable.

Andes (Western, Central, Eastern)

December-March is the low-rain window. June-August is secondary dry. Avoid April-May and October-November if possible; trails can be treacherous and dawn visibility poor.

Chocó / Pacific

Wet year-round. January-March and July-August are slightly less wet. Pick dates by what you want to see, not by weather.

Amazon

Low-water season December-March exposes riverbanks and sandbars, changing which species are accessible. High-water season May-July floods the várzea and lets you navigate deeper into terra firme.

Llanos / Orinoquía

December-March: savannas and tracks passable, cattle-country birding. July-August: wetlands concentrate water birds.

Practical recommendations

  1. First trip to Colombia? Book January or February and focus on Sierra Nevada plus one Andean region. Highest endemic return per day.
  2. Second trip? Plan July-August to cover Llanos wetlands or Amazon high-water.
  3. Chocó specialist trip? Either January-March or July-August. Either way, waterproof everything.
  4. Photography priority? January-February offers the best light and the fewest afternoon storms.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month for birding in Colombia?
December through March is the traditional peak because it is the dry season across most of the country. January and February are the single best months for Sierra Nevada and Andean endemics.
Can I go birding in Colombia during the rainy season?
Yes. April-May and October-November are birding-active months in Chocó and Amazonia, where rain is constant year-round regardless. Rain actually boosts activity in some species and reduces crowding.
When is the quietest season for bird activity?
June-August bring higher rainfall in the Andes and lower dawn chorus activity, though the Llanos and Amazon remain productive.
Are there endemic species only visible in certain months?
Most Colombian endemics are resident year-round. Seasonal effects are mainly about accessibility and weather, not bird presence.
