Blue-billed Curassow

Crax alberti

Spanish: Paujil de Pico Azul

Identification

Large black cracid with a bright blue cere and base to the bill, curly crest, and white-tipped tail feathers. Males are mostly black; females show rufous and barred patterns. Often walks the forest floor at dawn.

Where to see it

El Paujil Reserve (ProAves) in the middle Magdalena Valley is the most reliable site. Tayrona foothills hold a small relict population. Extremely habitat-sensitive and easily flushed; quiet approach essential.

Status

Critically Endangered (IUCN). Fewer than 2,500 individuals likely remain. Hunting and habitat loss are the main threats.
