Overview
The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta rises from the Caribbean coast to 5,700 meters in a single 42-kilometer gradient. Compressed into that elevational sweep are more than 635 bird species and 22 strict endemics, the highest density of endemism in the Neotropics. Eight days here, with early starts and a knowledgeable local guide, gives you a realistic shot at all 22.
Who this tour suits
Intermediate to advanced birders comfortable with 5:00 AM starts, mid-elevation hiking, and long observation sessions. Physical demands are moderate; trails at El Dorado are well-maintained and transport between elevations is vehicle-based.
Why do this tour
No other single range in Colombia concentrates so many endemics in so little territory. Staying at the ProAves El Dorado Reserve puts you in the middle of prime habitat before dawn, eliminating commute time during golden hours. Our Colombian guides know exactly where the Santa Marta Antpitta has been calling this week.
What makes vul.tours different
We are Colombian-led and bilingual. Your daily debrief happens in the language you prefer. All our Sierra Nevada departures use El Dorado Reserve because it supports ProAves conservation work directly, and because the birding is demonstrably better than from lower-elevation hotels.
